What are the responsibilities of the Tax Collectors Office?

  1. Process the bills accurately and in a timely fashion.
  2. Collect the taxes.
  3. Reconcile frequently with the Town Accountant.

Why is it important to pay your taxes?
The community of Avon provides many services to its citizens and the commercial establishments. The revenue generated by Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes allows the Town of Avon to make payroll for each department.

What happens to me if my taxes are not paid in a timely fashion?
Interest accumulates at a rate of 14 % for outstanding Real Estate Taxes. The Collector can initiate a Tax Taking procedure on your property.

The interest on overdue Excise Tax 12 % plus an additional Demand Fee of $ 5 plus a Warrant Fee of $10. If the Excise Tax is a remains overdue the Deputy Tax Collector can attach a “Marking Fee of $ 20” which notifies the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Please note, it is a privilege to hold a drivers license and it can be taken away by the RMV.

How is Excise Taxes Calculated?
The value of a motor vehicle for excise tax purposes is determine by the Commissioner of Revenue at varying percentages of the manufacturer’s LIST Price in the year of manufacturer as follows:

In the year preceding the designated year of manufacture 50%
In the year of manufacture 90%
In the second year 60 %
In the third year 40 %
In the fourth year 25 %
In the fifth and succeeding years 10 %

Note: Conditions and market value are not considered in determining neither the value nor the age after the fifth year.

Are Avon’s Tax Bills Semi-Annual or Quarterly?
Avon taxes are quarterly and payable on August 1, November 1, February 1 and May1. If the due date falls on a Saturday or Sunday the bill is due on the Monday following the weekend.

What is the current Tax Rate?

The FY 12 Rate for:

Residential Real Estate:       $ 13.58

Industrial Commercial:     $ 28.82

Personal Property:                 $ 28.79

How can I determine if my taxes have been paid?
Personal Property & Real Estate please send e-mail to the Tax Collector’s Office stating;
Your name, address and Parcel ID or Bill Number.

Excise Tax: name, address and / or description of the vehicle.

Taxpayers wishing to pay by check should address the check to: Tax Collector / Town of Avon

Avon’s Lock Box at Century Bank.

Please note, to insure proper credit a copy of a bill should accompany all checks.

How can I have a Municipal Lien Certificate processed at Town Hall?
Please send a check payable to the Tax Collector for the following amount along with the specific property clearly defined.

The cost for MLC is: $50 Residential and $100 for Commercial Properties.
