The Avon Water Department supplies and distributes potable drinking water to the residents and businesses located within Avon. The Water Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 42 miles of water main, 457 fire hydrants, two water storage standpipes, six pumping stations, and three water treatment plants and one garage facility. Two new additional pumping stations and one new water filtration plant are currently under construction, and are scheduled to become operational in 2008.
The water treatment plants disinfect and raise the pH of the groundwater after being pumped from groundwater wells. The disinfection process is chlorination, and the pH adjustment process is performed through the addition of potassium hydroxide. In 2008, a second water treatment process will be performed, when the water filtration plant is completed. The filtration plant will remove iron and manganese from the groundwater.
Customer service functions include water meter reading and billing, backflow testing and billing, final water reading for real estate transactions, investigation of high water bills, leak detection, oversight of both public and private water construction activities that connect to our municipal water supply, water main flushing activities, and emergency water repair support operations.
